1/17/16- Sunday Sermon Summary

The Apostles Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the universal Christian church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
-Jesus bodily ascended into heaven, He currently sits at the right hand of the Father, He will return to earth in the future
-Jesus sits at His Father’s right hand (a place of honor) and has been given a Kingdom to rule and reign due to His obedience and faithfulness to the Father
-The theme of the bible is ultimately the story of God’s rule and reign over His kingdom through His son Jesus
-What is the kingdom of God? The rule and reign of God through Jesus
-The kingdom of God on earth was inaugurated at the first coming of Christ and will be consummated at His second coming
-We currently are living in the “now but not yet” of the kingdom of God
-Jesus himself spoke of the kingdom being “at hand” and fulfilled in himself…and also of its ultimate fulfillment at a point in the future
-The kingdom of God is currently manifested in primarily spiritual ways as God dwells in the “midst” of His people through the Holy Spirit
-The kingdom of God currently exists on earth alongside the kingdom of flesh which can create a great deal of tension for the believer
-Matthew 13 contains multiple parables Jesus told to show what the kingdom looks like in the present context…..wheat and tares, etc.
-Although the kingdom is waiting for future consummation it is certainly not stagnant as it is growing and advancing like a mustard seed (Matt. 13)
-The kingdom of God advances and grows by the sharing of the story of Jesus (the gospel)
-The kingdom of God is also advancing inside of all true believers as God transforms the heart and mind from thinking in the “flesh” to kingdom thinking which is counter-intuitive to the flesh
-The process of sanctification is God’s Spirit at work in believers bringing about conformity to the image of Christ
-Be encouraged. We aren’t there yet! The kingdom of flesh will soon be done away with!
-Be encouraged. We CAN experience many benefits of being in the kingdom of God right now!
-Choose today to participate in the kingdom of God:

1- By becoming a citizen of the kingdom by placing your faith and trust of the king-Jesus
2- By then sharing that gospel with others
3- By abiding in Christ and seeking to grow in kingdom awareness and thinking
Scriptures and Quotes Used:

Acts 1:6 “So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” 9 And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. 10 And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, 11 and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”

1 Peter 3:22- “who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to h

Matthew 24:14- “And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.”

2 Corinthians 5:18-20- “All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.”

Romans 12:2- “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect”

“The King has come. The King has dealt with sin once for all in the sacrifice of himself. The King sits at the Father’s right hand and reigns now until all his enemies are under his feet. The King’s righteousness is now already ours by faith. The King’s Spirit is now already dwelling in us. The King’s holiness is now already being produced in us. The King’s joy and peace have now already been given to us. The King’s victory over Satan is now already ours as we use the sword of the Spirit, the Word of God. The King’s power to witness is now already available to us. And the King’s gifts—the gifts of his Spirit—are now already available for ministry.” – John Piper
