9/27/15- Sunday Sermon Summary

Do BIG Things

Main Text: Joshua 3
-God created and redeemed us to do BIG things
-It was a BIG thing God asked His people to do in Joshua 3 (take their families across a raging river on faith)
-Our idea of big things may not always be God’s idea of big things
Isaiah 55:8-9-“ For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts”
-Big things are where God is working and is inviting you to join him
1. Doing BIG Things Ensures Our Growth
-God calls us to do big things not because he desperately needs us to accomplish them…but because he is deeply interested in who we are becoming along the way
-Yes.The struggle is real and the struggle is designed for our ultimate growth
2. Doing BIG Things Pushes Us Into a Healthy Dependence on God
-Joshua 3- they had to start walking in the raging water all the while trusting that God would stop the water some 17 miles away
-We should pursue doing things that we know will not be accomplished unless God comes through
“Is there any challenge in your life right now that is large enough that you have no hope of doing it apart from God’s help? If not, consider the possibility you are seriously under challenged.”- John Ortberg
3. Doing BIG Things Encourages Us to Invite Others into a Larger Story
-When you choose not to pursue dong the big things in your life…you not only are limiting your growth but you are also keeping others from growing along with you
-Pursuing big things is not a solo project but is always done in community with others
4. Doing BIG Things Gives Ultimate Glory to God- Not Ourselves
-Joshua 3:10- This is how you will know- God will be glorified!
-When you pursue big things and they are achieved you will be able to look back and say “Only God could have done that!”

Maybe your big thing….
Is to serve as a missionary in a foreign land or serve in the local soup kitchen
To plant a church or start a bible study group at work
To preach to thousands or share the gospel with your neighbor
To be a pastor or to be a christian plumber
To launch an organization that cares for the orphans around the world or to disciple the kids in your home

-Know what your big things are then pursue them on faith! If you know….then get to it!
-If you want to walk on water….get out of the boat
